This 2-day desert expedition is the perfect solution for travelers who seek the magic of the Moroccan sands but are operating on a limited timeline. Departing from the vibrant energy of Marrakech, this journey transitions quickly into the high-altitude majesty of the Atlas Mountains before descending into the ancient palm groves of the Draa Valley. It is an affordable yet deeply enriching adventure that captures the essential spirit of the Sahara—from historic UNESCO fortresses to the rhythmic sway of a camel caravan at twilight.
You will join a small collective of fellow explorers, traveling in a modern, climate-controlled vehicle through some of North Africa’s most cinematic landscapes. The highlight of this odyssey is a night spent under a canopy of infinite stars in a traditional Berber camp, where the heat of the day gives way to the cool, blue stillness of the desert night. For those who want to witness a Saharan sunset and sleep among the dunes without committing to a week-long trek, this 2-day passage offers a profound and unforgettable taste of nomadic life.
The High Atlas Ascent
Your Saharan story begins with an early morning departure from your Marrakech Riad, quickly ascending into the High Atlas Mountains. The road through the Tizi N’tichka pass is a masterclass in natural drama, offering jaw-dropping views of snow-capped peaks and remote Berber villages that seem carved directly into the mountainside. You will pause for fresh coffee and photographs at the summit, breathing in the thin, crisp air of the Atlas before descending toward the pre-Saharan plains.
The Ancient Draa Path
In the afternoon, you will stand before the towers of Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has hosted film crews from Gladiator to Game of Thrones. After a traditional lunch, the landscape shifts as you enter the Draa Valley, where millions of date palms create a vibrant emerald contrast against the red earth. As the sun begins to dip, you arrive in Zagora to meet your camel caravan. You will glide into the desert as the horizon turns deep purple, arriving at your camp for an evening of fireside stories and a star-filled sky that defies description.
The Dawn of the Desert
Wake in the silent, pre-dawn blue to witness a Saharan sunrise—a moment where the desert floor glows with a soft, golden fire. After an artisanal Berber breakfast at the camp, you will mount your camel for a final trek back to the edge of the sands. The early morning light provides a completely different perspective of the Zagora landscape, revealing the textures and patterns of the rocky desert that were hidden in the shadows of the previous evening.
The Cinematic Return
The return journey leads you back through Ouarzazate, where you will have time to visit the historic Taourirt Kasbah, a former Glaoui palace of incredible architectural detail. From here, you begin the climb back over the Atlas Mountains, retracing the scenic curves of the Tizi N’tichka. You will arrive back in the vibrant hum of Marrakech by early evening, carrying with you the lingering scent of woodsmoke and the profound peace of a night spent in the great silence of the Sahara.

Everything you need to know about your 2 Day Morocco Desert Tour From Marrakech
Zagora is a "Reg" or rocky desert rather than the high sand dunes (Erg) of Merzouga. However, it offers a beautiful, flat horizon and small dunes that provide a perfect backdrop for the iconic sunset camel ride.
We recommend long trousers or jeans to ensure comfort during the ride. For the evening, bring a light jacket or sweater, as desert temperatures can drop significantly once the sun sets.
The drive is approximately 7 to 8 hours. While it is a long day in the vehicle, the route is broken up by frequent scenic stops, historical visits, and lunch breaks to ensure a comfortable experience.
